I ate bats today

I wanted my usual Sunday pancakes today but because it’s Halloween, I wanted to dress it up.

I ate bats for breakfast today. Three bats to be exact.

I used my chocolate protein pancake recipe and cut the pancakes in half using zip zag patterns to make the bat wings. The idea for the bat pancakes design came from here. For quicker preparation, you can also use your favorite pancake mix and add a tablespoon or so of cocoa powder.

I used Peanut Butter & Co Dark Chocolate Dreams to make the head. I scooped about 3/4 tablespoon for each head and put dried cranberries in the middle for the eyes.

The combination of Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter + Fruit jam = I’m doing my sunday pancake dance. I used Crofter’s jam for the blood effect on the bats.

It was very easy to make and fun to eat.

They’re coming right at you!! Towards your mouth that is 🙂

I’m sad Halloween is over. I will have to wait another year before I eat more bats.

Hope you had a fun filled weekend and a great Halloween celebration!!

Do you like to be creative with your food presentation? I used to work at a yogurt shop in high school and I  loved making designs with the yogurt swirls. I always wanted them look pretty. I’m a yogurt pouring & swirling machine.

These are adorable! 🙂 I’ve never seen anyone make bats out of pancakes! Great idea!
ps. I heard it’s going to be in the upper 80s this week in the OC. What the heck, right??

    • Squigglefloey, really? That would be a nice change from the rain we had last week. I hope it warms up soon before I leave for my trip. It’s going to be chilly in San Francisco.

  2. What a freaking adorable breakfast! So creative. Every once in a while I get a little creative with my food….I’m usually too hungry to make anything out of the ordinary fancy though 😉

    • I know what you mean. I am more creative in the morning but when dinner comes, as long as the food is hot and tasty, then it doesn’t matter how it looks.

  3. Those bats are adorable. I love to be creative with my food but unfortunately when I try too hard it turns out messy and like a blob ha.

  4. Annette (Defiant Vegan) says:

What a great idea. You must have had fun making them and eating them of course.

I’ll remember that for next Halloween.

  5. Omg, Lea these are SO CUTE!!! Did you make these for your fiance?
I wish i had the patience to make my food cuter and prettier. These are so fun and festive.

    • Hi Roxan, thanks 🙂 Ha ha, you remembered our pancake conversation?

No, these pancakes were for me. But the fiance likes to eat pancakes on Sundays too but he makes Mickey Mouse shape ones.

  6. love the bats! what a fun pic.

  7. Haha that is so clever! And Dark Chocolate Dreams is like the most amazing peanut butter ever 🙂

  8. Dark Chocolate Dreams is my # 1 favorite PB of all time. Your bat panckaes are so awesome!

  9. Super cute!

  10. These are sooo cute!! It’s always fun to make food look pretty–makes it all the more fun to eat 🙂

  11. Yumm these look tasty, and festive! I like being creative with presentation sometimes, depending on how hungry I am!! And I love PB&Co as well – Cinnamon Raisin Swirl is my favourite.

    • Angela, I can’t find the Cinnamon Raisin Swirl in my area. I would love to try it if I can find some. For now, the dark chocolate flavor is my favorite from their line.

  12. ha, very creative

  13. How cute are you and your bat pancakes. Loves it =)

  14. How cute, these are adorable! Kids would love them.

  15. These are amazing! What a cute idea.

  16. hehe those are SO cute! I’d like to be ABLE to get creative with my food – I think it’s adorable – but i’m no good. It reminds me of those bento boxes – so cool but I’ve got nothing!

  17. Great pics, Lea! Did you get a DSLR?

    • Hi Alyssa, no it’s not new. It’s about 3 years old. I just didn’t use it for the blog before, only when I was traveling.

I’ve been playing and learning more with the DSLR camera and I like using it when I can.

  18. Cute– What a great idea, Lea! Love all the bloggers creative halloween recipe ideas. I, too, had a “spooky”, festive breakfast 🙂
