Lobster & First Dance Songs

Lobster Season

The fiance’s hobby is fishing and diving. It’s lobster season right now so when he has time, he takes his boat and dives for lobster at night.  So around this season, we usually have fresh lobster in the house.

With freshly caught lobster, he cooked paella dish with shrimp, lobster and brown rice. (Side note: I am so proud of him for switching over to brown rice. He buys and cooks brown rice on his own now. A proud moment for me).

Did you know fresh lobster (well, at least lobster caught the same day) taste a little sweet? It’s so good and fresh.

On the side, we had Moroccan couscous on a bed of greens ( my contribution to our dinner).

To complete the meal, he also made miso soup with a lot of seaweed and lobster meat.

I love seaweed. I asked for extra on my soup.

The fiance is a great cook.  But he goes by taste and does not measure his ingredients. So unfortunately, as great as his dishes are, it’s hard to share the recipe because there is none.

Wedding Update:

So I have been tackling a lot of big decisions lately regarding the wedding.  This week, I wanted to think about something light-hearted and a fun topic for our wedding.

The song for our first dance.

The wedding venue will be at a private beach. We will have the beach all to ourselves (which by the way I had a nightmare last night, we arrived at the wedding and the place was packed and there was a concert). There will be no tourists or strangers with their beer and speedos crashing the wedding party.

Anyways, the dance floor will be placed on the sand, a several steps from the beach. So when I think about our first dance, I already envision the sound of the crashing waves in the background. How romantic and calming is that? Do we even need a song?

Can we just dance under the moonlight, surrounded by candles and the sound of the waves?

These are the list of wedding “first dance” songs that I’ve considered.

Most Popular Classics

The Top 10 Classic First Dance Songs:

  • Unforgettable by Nat King Cole
  • The Way You Look Tonight by Frank Sinatra
  • What a Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong
  • Can’t Help Falling in Love by Elvis Presley
  • At Last by Etta James
  • It had to be You by Harry Connick Jr.
  • A Kiss is Just a Kiss by Michael Feinstein
  • Unchained Melody by The Righteous Brothers
  • A Whole New World by Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle
  • Endless Love by Diana Ross and Lionel Richie

Modern Favorites

  • All my Life by K-Ci and JoJo (this brings me back to high school prom)
  • Could not Ask for More by Edwin McCain
  • It’s Your Love by Tim McGraw and Faith Hill
  • I Swear by All 4 One (also by John Montgomery)
  • This I Swear by Nick Lachey

Less Played First Dance Songs (but still a popular option)

  • Songbird by Fleetwood Mac
  • Beautiful by Gordon Lightfoot
  • So This is Love by James Ingram
  • Nothing’s Gonna Change my Love for You by Glenn Medeiros (reminds me of karaoke at family parties)
  • Romeo & Juliet Love Theme composed by Tchaikovsky

Something Different, Something New

  • Too Good to be True by Lauryn Hill – a soulful remake of a Frankie Valli classic.
  • Luna by The Smashing Pumpkins
  • I Will Always Love You by The Cure
  • Forever in my Life by Prince

Not every couple fits the traditional, classic bride and groom mold.  Our wedding is non-traditional in that we are doing a destination wedding. I have no problem straying from the norm and being a bit original in the selection of our first dance song!

Whether we choose something different or decide to stick with tradition and sway to a popular first dance song, we will be sure to practice before the wedding or even squeeze in a few dance lessons!

P.S. My Julian Bakery bread giveaway ends today. Go check it out if you want to win some free bread loaves.  I will announce the winner tomorrow.

  1. Congratulations! I like your song selection!

  2. If we didn’t have ours picked our already (it’s a secret!) I would have probably insist we use Ewan McGregor’s “Your Song”. Or maybe Jack Johnson’s “Better Together”. Oh! Or Steve Azar’s new one “Sunshine” – nice and calming, and the lyrics work perfectly for your setting…

And now I want to change my song. Thanks a lot. 😉

  3. Ah! When I used to live in New England (and ate seafood/meat)- I loved me some lobster! The dish looks incredible (go fiance!). Your wedding is going to be incredible! Our first dance song was “This Kind of Love” by Sister Hazel 🙂

    This is great!

  6. Andy and I chose a first dance song that had a ton of meaning to both of us. Jimmy Eat World’s “For me this is heaven.” It was awesome. Neither of us liked to dance but we did it!

You are going to have such a beautiful wedding!

  7. I think you should do “forever” by chris brown, simply because it reminded me of this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-94JhLEiN0

    • I love that song. We love the show The Office so they copied the same thing for Pam & Jim’s wedding, so cute.

We will definitely have that song at our wedding and will be included on the DJ’s playlist. That and Jason Mraz songs because it reminds us of time spent in Hawaii together.

  8. Oh, such beautiful songs! I would have a hard time choosing 😀 a friend of mine danced to Halleluja which was sooooo beautiful and I still can’t listen to the song without getting my eyes wet, it was such a beautiful moment.

Fresh lobster at home sounds GREAT!

  10. dancing under the moonlight is super romantic!

  11. Awww KC and JoJo… I loved that song! I always danced to it with my jr high crush at dances. Personally I tend to like the more traditional songs but I love love love the idea of Lauryn Hill (plus its one of my favorite Franki Valli songs).

  12. I am such a LOBSTAH lover! Guess that’s the New Englander in me 😉

  13. Monique says:

  15. First of all, I wish that I lived somewhere where we could catch lobster. 🙂 Secondly, your wedding is going to be BEAUTIFUL and I love all of the song selections. Pick the one that has the most meaning to you and your fiance. 🙂

  16. Do you guys have a “song” together? I really like “cant help falling in love” but just the sound of the waves could be really beautiful and unique!

    • We love this song that is Disney themed, it’s a medley of their romantic songs.

We have annual Disneyland passes so we love hearing that song during the shows. If we can clear the rights to it or get a good copy, then we might work it into our dance.

  17. what a perfect wedding you have , the song really a good one and the choose of food are perfect too. A wedding with a healthy eating habit .
