Thrive

This week, I attended a free seminar at my local health food store.

The seminar featured professional triathlete, plant-based nutrition expert, and bestselling author, Brendan Brazier. He shared how to thrive on a whole foods, plant-based diet.

I sat right in front of him and noticed the shoes right away. We are matching in red 🙂

Brendan’s seminar was based on his bestselling book, Thrive: The Vegan Nutrition Guide to Optimal Performance in Sports and Life and his latest title, Thrive Fitness: The Vegan-Based Training Program for Maximum Strength, Health and Fitness.

He mentioned that he has tried all sorts of diet and eating lifestyle, he has tried low-carb and high protein diet in the past, raw food diet and etc. What has worked for him and his training is a plant-based diet.

He went on to discuss why he thinks the typical Standard American Diet (SAD) have led people to be over-fed and under nourished.

He  also talked about how to:

• Lose weight and reduce body fat
• Boost energy, productivity and mental clarity
• Reduce stress and enhance mood
• Eliminate hunger and junk food cravings
• Build a stronger immune system
• Diminish visible signs of aging
• Lower cholesterol
• Stay healthy for life

Brendan explained how to reduce nutritional stress by the means of plant-based nutrition.

I bought his book Thrive last year so I was familiar with the Thrive diet and the concept of high-net gains food. I also own a few jars of the Vega products and use them in my smoothies.

These are all great products but they are also pricey. I know that it’s good quality, so I understand the high price but it’s just not practical for everyone. I buy them when they go on sale. The full servings are too concentrated for me and I like them to taste a little diluted so I usually use half servings for each use.

After the seminar, we were able to sample all the Vega products. I have the Vanilla Chai flavor, but I sampled and liked the Berry and Chocolate flavors too.

We also got to take home a few samples.

Book signing after the sampling. Unfortunately I had to get home right away and couldn’t wait in line to get my book signed 😦

I’m not vegan but I do eat and cook vegan food. Preparing some of the recipes from the Thrive Diet requires planning (sprouting and etc) and a few of the ingredients are not normal pantry staples (i.e. hemp protein, buckwheat flour, wild rice). However, I believe that when I make the time and commit to it, I think my health will greatly benefit from it.

Have you ever tried Vega products or read the Thrive Diet book?

Comments

  1. I’ve heard a lot about him from No Meat Athlete (blog), but am yet to read the book /try the products. I’ve heard some of them taste a little like…dirt. I like his general message though and think its wonderful that hes opened so many peoples eyes up to the possibility of a plant based diet

  2. Annette (Defiant Vegan) says:

I actually have one of his books and I purchased the chocolate flavor Health Optimizer as I’m vegan and I do Raw meals.

I agree they are rich so 1 scoop seems to be what I can handle as well with added fruit to the smoothie.

I also tried his Whole Food Smoothie Infusion and his Sport Performance which is for an after work out recovery drink. These are delicious.

I agree those items used in his recipes are really one of kind items not commonly used in every day cooking. I’m in the process of adding those types of ingredients to my pantry as I’ve changed my eating habits it will take time but when I’m done I won’t regret that I did.

Thanks for the post HC would have loved to attend that seminar. I’m sure there will be others.

    Have a Blessed Day.
    😛

  3. I actually got a smoothie mix during a conference in the summer, but I haven’t tried it yet. I hear it’s a little on the sweeter side, so when I do try it, I’m going to water it down a bit.

Sounds like an interesting talk! 🙂

  4. I want to meet him so bad! He always comes across as so cool in his interviews. And basing his ideas off of performance appeals to me much more than “I feel like I have ENERGY! The food has given me LIFEFORCE!” that comes from some types like that.

If you want to get sort of a “knock-off” version of Vega, for much cheaper, you can order a custom blend at True Protein.com. Not in most of those flavors though, I don’t think.

  5. You sold me on the Vegn!! 🙂
