From LAX to pharmacy

We are back from our trip, but the adventures has not stopped.

We are adjusting to our daily routine, picking up where we left off…which was right after the wedding and after one week from Mexico. It has been a whirlwind of a month. In the last month, we have visited 2 countries, went thru 4 customs check, 10 flights, countless boat rides and mosquito bites. What a summer huh?

The first day back was a blur. I was so sleepy or jet lagged or drowsy from my meds, that I slept most of the day. Right after touching down at LAX, after a 14 hour flight, we went straight to the pharmacy to get me some relief.

Let me rewind a little bit.

Our last night in Boracay, we wanted to celebrate the end of our honeymoon and celebrate the wonderful trip that was about to end. We had a blast after all.

We decided for our last dinner in paradise that we would feast on unlimited seafood.

All week we have been passing by all the seafood buffet restaurants along the beach and knew we would try it out during our last night.

Everything looked so good and fresh.

The spirit of our whole trip was to be adventurers and try different things and explore different places.

I tried different dishes during our dinner. I had fish, crabs, squids, shrimps, clams and oysters.

Chris enjoyed several plate full of oysters and clams, while I tried different dishes here and there.  It was only the 2nd time I have ever tried oyster in my life, and I still don’t like it. I prefer mussels instead.

We had a wonderful dinner and enjoyed the rest of our last night walking around the beach and the shops one last time.

The next morning was our flight home.

We took this picture in Boracay to show the smallest and hottest airport we have ever been in. It was hot and humid, it was outdoors and we were dying waiting for our delayed flight.

On our way to the airport, I started noticing the bumps on my legs but I thought maybe they were just from the heat. Then my ears started itching really bad. I took a picture in the shuttle on the way to the airport because my ears felt really hot. Pink ears.

After our 40 minute flight from Boracay to Manila, my ears really started to bother me and they started swelling up a bit. At this time, they felt really hot.

It was so odd. I’ve never had this reaction before. I don’t think I’m allergic to any food, especially seafood because I’ve enjoyed them all my life.

Anyways, I took some allergy medicine before we boarded our flight from Manila to Los Angeles, which helped me dosed off and made the flight seem really short since I was sleeping most of the time.

14 hours later, we landed at LAX and the bumps had spread to my legs and arms and the area around my eyes were swollen.  We went straight to a pharmacy, talked to a pharmacist and bought allergy medicine and Cortizone cream for the itchiness. The swelling is gone but I still have the bumps. In the meantime, I have been applying cortizone and aloe vera gel throughout the day.  I will see a specialist soon but we are thinking I might be allergic to shellfish, or just had bad seafood. I’m hoping it’s the latter because I love me some seafood.

I think the meds are starting to kick-in and I’m ready for bed. Gotta go!

Do you have any food allergies? If you do, have you had them all your life or more recent?

  1. oh my goodness! I’m so glad you’re ok! Take it easy over there. I will keep my fingers crossed for you that it was just bad seafood (being allergic to crab and shrimp would be a downright shame!). I don’t have any food allergies that I know of

    • I hope the same too, that it was just bad seafood that night. But I’m scared to try any type of seafood so soon to test it out, since I’m still itching 😦

  2. Oh my, Lea!! I’m sorry that you are not feeling well! I hope you feel better! :)Definitely get some rest and get things checked out. It sounds like an allergic reaction to me.

I had allergy testing done a long time ago and it came up that I am allergic to papaya. Funny thing is, I’ve never even had it before. Ever since then I’ve stayed away from it. I’m curious what would happen if I tried it.

    • I’m feeling better now, thanks. You are allergic to papaya? that’s the first I’ve heard of that allergies. Let me warn you, Philippines is not a place to visit if you have papaya allergies. It’s everywhere. papaya tree on the side of the road, papaya salad, pickled papaya with your dish and of course, papaya fruit and papaya shakes. Whoa!

      I hope it’s not a serious allergy.

  3. That sucks that you developed allergies in Bora. I have A TON of food allergies and always break out in hives. Hope you feel better soon!

  4. Oh no! I don’t have any food allergies but my hubby just recently realized he’s allergic to some fish, like scallops and gets super hot and dizzy and can’t breathe….good thing this happened at the end of your trip.

    Welcome back though 🙂

I don’t have any allergies to food that I know of although I haven’t been drinking milk but I had coffee with creamer that was not vegan so it had Casein in it which is derived from milk and I notice that my stomach gets upset.

My guess is because I haven’t drank it I’m creating sensitivities to it now. Who knows.

But welcome back and I’m so sorry about the bumps and stuff, you seem to have it under control.

    Feel better soon. = )

    • Thanks Annette, I’m feeling much better…except for the itchiness, it’s still there but swollen face is gone. Once you have eaten really clean and avoid food like dairy, it’s hard on your stomach when you have it again isn’t it?

How is the wedding planning coming along? Is it soon? It’s going to be such a special day. I keep replaying our wedding in my head all the time. I’m so happy for you and your husband.

      • Annette (Defiant Vegan) says:

        Hi Lea,

Yea we found out his Daughters are only here for a short time so I wasn’t able to plan it out for this summer which is what I wanted so we are having the ceremony with just our kids and maybe a couple of friends then when his daughters are here from Oregon in December we will have the reception.

I’m planning on sending out announcements that we were married with a picture of the two of us with a special script saying that we were married on such and such date (July 21st) then attaching another announcement that a reception is following in Dec. with all the details or a Save the Date kind of a thing.

My colors will probably be silver (lt. Gray or med. gray)with pink or black with pink I really like the damask style so that’s what I’m going with.

I am excited I can imagine playing it over and over in my head as well with the way yours turned out it was absolutely stunning to see some of the pics I can only imagine the rest.

        I”m so happy for you.

        = )

Oh, geez! I hope you’re feeling better now!

I don’t have known food allergies, but I did develop one to bees. I was fine as a kid being stung, and then a couple years ago I got stung and my entire lower leg was swollen and throbbing from it. I had no clue until of my allergy until it happened.

😦 Hopefully somehow you aren’t allergic to shellfish so you can continue to enjoy them. ! It’s strange that you didn’t get the reaction until the following day, isn’t it?

    • I’m feeling better and the bumps are slowly going away. At least my face is not swollen anymore. Yeah, I was thinking that too why it took a full 24 hours for the full allergy reaction to take effect. The itchiness started the morning after and it got worst as the day progressed. I just hope it was just bad food and not allergies.

I’ve never been stung by a bee. Did you have to get shots after you got stung?

      • nikkionlunch says:

I didn’t get shots. My breathing at that time wasn’t affected. The swelling, throbbing and redness lasted for a few days, and since it didn’t go away I went to see my Doc. She gave me a prescription for an antibiotic in case (redness) and an allergy medicine.

I’ve wondered about having one of those shots on me. I wouldn’t know if the allergy has worsened until I get stung again.

I’d get to the Doctor and be tested for shellfish allergies to be safe, girl!

  7. Oh nooo! I’m sorry to hear (and see) about your bad reaction! I hope it clears up asap and that it’s nothing serious. And I hope it’s not a major seafood allergy!

I’m very, very grateful to not have any food allergies, and as far I know I don’t have a bee allergy. Actually I had no allergies until just this year, when I suddenly got seasonal allergies bc of all the pollen here in DC. It happens to A LOT of people here actually, so I wasn’t totally surprised I had eventually succumbed as well.

    • Thanks Lisa. It’s getting better everyday and the bumps are slowly going away, now if only I can stop scratching like a mad woman.

We get Santa Ana winds here in SoCal and everyone seems to have allergies when the wind blows too. Watery eyes, runny nose and etc. I take Claritin when that happens and try to stay indoors.

  8. This past december I got tested for Celiacs and found out that I had that. Up until then I was eating tons of gluten etc and was getting super sick (obviously I stopped eating it before getting tested, but I had no idea why I was getting so sick).
